PVP K-30 (POLYVINYLPYRROLIDONE)

Product Groups

PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) is a water-soluble polymer made from the monomer N-vinylpyrrolidone. It is hygroscopic, amorphous and non-ionic. It is miscible with various organic solvents such as water, alcohol, ether and chloroform. It has a constant pH value and can form transparent films. Approximately 1.5 million tons are produced annually.

PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) is used in many fields in industry and daily life. PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) is polymerized or esterified to produce various PVP derivatives. These derivatives are used in glass, ceramics, soap, fertilizer, fertilizer, paint, textile, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, sealants, water treatment and other industries.

The chemical and physical properties of PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) are as follows:

  • Its molecular weight is 40,000-60,000 g/mol.
  • Melting point is 150 °C.
  • It has no boiling point.
  • Its density is 1.05 g/mL.
  • Solubility is high in water and alcohol, medium in ether, low in chloroform.
  • pKa value is 4.25.

The production methods of PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) are as follows:

  • Radical polymerization method: This is the most common production method of PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE). N-vinylpyrrolidone monomer is converted into PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) polymer by a radical polymerization reaction initiated by heat or light. Some inhibitors are also used in this method.
  • Ionic polymerization method: This is an alternative production method of PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE). N-vinylpyrrolidone monomer is converted into PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) polymer by an ionic polymerization reaction initiated with an ionic initiator. This method allows to produce polymers at lower temperature and higher molecular weight.

Areas of use of PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) include the following:

  • Glass industry: PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) is also used in the glass industry. PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) polymers applied to the surface of glass increase the light transmittance and durability of the glass. PVP K-30 (POLIVINYLPYROLIDONE) adhesives are also used for bonding glass.
  • Ceramic industry: PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) is also used in the ceramic industry. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) polymers added to ceramic paste adjust the fluidity and firing temperature of ceramics. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) polish is also used for polishing ceramics.
  • Soap industry: PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) is also used in the soap industry. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLOLIDON) is used for saponification of oils used in soap making. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) polymers are also used to improve the foaming of soap and its resistance to hard water.
  • Fertilizer industry: PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) is also used in the fertilizer industry. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) is used to prevent the explosion of ammonium nitrate used in fertilizer production. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) polymers are also used to increase the water holding capacity of fertilizer and the nutrient uptake of plants.
  • Paint industry: PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) is also used in the paint industry. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) is used to increase the solubility of resins and pigments used in paint making. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) polymers are also used to improve the adhesion, drying and gloss of paint.

Textile industry: PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) is also used in the textile industry. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) is used for dyeing, printing and finishing of fabrics. PVP K-30 (POLIVINILPIROLIDON) polymers are also used to brighten, soften and prevent wrinkles in fabrics.
